What is Indian HS code list?



Indian HS code list are otherwise known as the Indian Trade Clarification that is prepared on the basis of Harmonized System of Coding adopted by India for its export and import functions. An eight digit number is allotted to traders to be used as the ITC-HS code. The codes are divided into two schedules – I and II respectively.
ITC-HS schedule I deals with the rules and regulations of imports whereas Schedule Ii deals with rules and regulations pertaining to exports. Schedule I is further classified into twenty one sections which contain a further ninety eight chapters. These twenty one sections encompass various articles like vegetable products, plastics, rubber, textiles, footwear, mineral products, machinery, chemicals, measuring instruments, etc.

Administration of HS code list

The additions, deletions and alterations to the Indian HS code list are solely performed by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The routine functions of GDFT in relation t the management of the list includes updating of commodity descriptions, removal of redundant codes, disabling defunct codes, allotting new codes, etc. A periodical updating process is undertaken by the department to provide an accurate and precise list of codes for the use by exporters and importers.
